Abyss and Back
One of the very first essays Sam published, "Abyss and Back" takes on the Qabalistic Abyss — the traditional gap in the Tree of Life between the personal self and the transpersonal Supernals — and what crossing it is actually supposed to entail for a working ceremonial magician.
Rather than treating the Abyss as pure metaphor, Sam writes about it as a genuine crisis point in practice: a stage of magical development with real psychological stakes, not just an interesting diagram.
As an early piece, it shows the throughline that runs across Sam's whole body of work — a refusal to let esoteric symbolism stay purely symbolic, always pushing it back toward lived, testable practice.
