On Lineage
Many ceremonial and initiatory traditions rest their authority on claims of unbroken lineage — a direct chain of initiation reaching back to a founding source. Sam examines what that claim is actually doing, and what happens to an order's legitimacy when the chain is uncertain, reconstructed, or openly acknowledged as new.
Having founded the Open Source Order of the Golden Dawn on explicitly open, non-lineage-dependent terms, Sam writes from direct experience of building a teaching order without leaning on an unbroken initiatory pedigree.
The essay argues that depth of practice and quality of teaching matter more than the length of a claimed chain — a position that shaped how his own order was structured from the start.
